About the Technology

In 2010, Android became the top-selling smartphone platform worldwide, with its market share increasing rapidly. By the beginning of 2011, over 200,000 applications were available on Google's Android Market, with over 2,500,000,000 downloads to date and a high proportion of free apps. Applications can also be downloaded from sites other than Android Market.

The Android mobile operating system is based on a customized version of Linux. Native applications are written in Java, and specially compiled and packaged to run on the Android's Dalvik java virtual machine. An Android application runs through a specific lifecyle that's based on the unique interface, limitations, resources, and use model of the mobile device.
